Why the Snake?!

Why the Snake?!

When we showed the initial sketches for our logo, we were met with a chorus of, “Really, a snake?” or “Are you sure you want that as your logo?” At first, a snake might seem like a strange choice. But for us, the snake is much more than just a design choice — it’s a visual manifesto, a symbol of everything we stand for: transformation, curiosity, love, and defiance. Paired with a heart for a tongue and a pencil drawing a heart as its tail, this snake, Scribble, tells the story of who we are and what we believe.

Snakes have been revered and misunderstood in equal measure throughout history, which is part of why we love them. To us, they perfectly embody learning as an act of transformation.

Shedding what no longer serves you is essential for growth. Snakes grow by shedding their skin in a process called ecdysis. It’s vulnerable and vital — a perfect metaphor for learning. True growth requires us to let go of outdated knowledge, ingrained biases, or the fear of the unknown. Like ecdysis, learning is a continuous process of renewal, one we embrace with each new idea we encounter.

Across time and cultures, snakes have symbolized wisdom and knowledge. They’re powerful, agile, curious, and resourceful — qualities that resonate deeply with our belief in nurturing the innate philomathic (a love of learning) qualities we are all born with. For us, the snake is a reminder that wisdom isn’t static. It’s dynamic, earned through exploration and reflection.

The addition of a heart and pencil might seem playful, and it is, but it is also profoundly intentional. A heart for a tongue isn’t just a whimsical touch. The heart speaks to our belief in education as an act of love and empathy. To truly learn, we must connect — not only with the material but with each other, our emotions, and the broader human experience. Learning is as much about feeling as it is about thinking.

The pencil tail represents creativity and expression, both central to the humanities we champion. Whether sketching, writing, or solving a problem, the pencil is a tool of creation. It reminds us that learning helps us leave our mark on the world and that this mark should be one of love and liberation.

Together, these elements encapsulate the Super Genius Society’s mission: to transform learning into a joyful, liberating act of curiosity and creation.

Another reason we love the snake as our symbol is because it has been maligned  (which has led to it being misunderstood). Its complexity has been reduced, its image rebranded into something singular and limiting. That’s a disservice to what the snake truly represents: wisdom, transformation, and adaptability. So we reclaim it. Our Scribble is defiant, shedding outdated notions just as we challenge the idea that learning should be rigid, hierarchical, or controlled. Scribble whispers that learning is inherently joyful, liberating, and empowering.

Education, as we see it, is an act of rebellion. It’s choosing curiosity over compliance, wonder over fear. The snake, with its heart and pencil, invites us to shed the constraints of traditional education and embrace a way of learning that is dynamic, creative, and deeply human.

Our mission at Super Genius Society is to help people — children and adults alike — reconnect with their natural curiosity, their inner philomath. The snake perfectly represents this mission because it embodies the power of transformation and the resilience required to keep growing, no matter what.

Whether it’s a child encountering new ideas or an adult rediscovering the joy of learning, the snake reminds us that it’s never too late (or too early) to embrace transformation. It’s a timeless emblem for learners of all ages.

Our snake embodies empathy and critical thinking its heart and pencil remind us that learning isn’t just about accumulating knowledge — it’s about how we use it, how we share it, and how we make our own mark. Learning allows us to see the world from fresh perspectives and consider multiple points of view. Just as the snake itself has been misunderstood or reframed, Scribble reminds us to look again, to see both the world and ourselves in new ways.

Scribble is more than a logo — it’s a story. It tells the world what we stand for: love, wisdom, creativity, and fearless curiosity. It’s a call to shed the fear of change, to embrace the unknown, and to find joy in discovery and transformation.

Most of all, Scribble reminds us that we don’t need permission to learn. We get to decide. Like a snake, we can transform again and again.

Learn, Always.
